Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice (actually Si monumentum requiris, circumspice ; Latin for 'If you are looking for a monument, take a look around') is an album by the black metal band Deathspell Omega . It was released in 2004.

Style and content

Musically, the album represents a strong change in style compared to the previous work of the band. Both an increase in the recording quality and a more avant-garde , experimental approach clearly distinguish this work from previous publications; the singing is also very different from that of its predecessors. The drums are produced more powerfully and the individual instruments can be heard more clearly. The album is less flowing and therefore generally faster, more dissonant and hectic, with more breaks , and in structure and rhythm partly comparable to Satyricon's nemesis Divina . The guttural vocals are grunted rather than croaked in the typical black metal style , but with a scratchy undertone.

Each LP side begins with a “prayer”. The album also contains several quieter pieces with choral singing in the background. This structure was chosen to give the listener a more "digestible" access to the 76-minute work, which is very long. The album represents the first part of a trilogy that deals with theological topics such as God , Satan and the relationship of man to them; Quotations from the Bible are also used, some of which are unprocessed. Satan is addressed in worship as both "Satan" and "God" ; Kyle Ward of sputnikmusic describes this as "sometimes difficult to decipher," and Paul "Sargon the Terrible" Batteiger of The Metal Crypt notes that just reading the song titles one might think it was a Christian band ; Reading the text of Jvbilate Deo (O Be Joyful in the Lord) once, however, dispels such ideas. The album is described as "theological dispute on the divine essence of the Devil, the roles and virtues of faith and the place of man therein" ('a theological dispute about the divine essence of the devil , the roles and values of faith and the place of People in it '). The EP Kénôse is seen by the band as an appendix to the album and its main theological-philosophical theme.

Drink the Devil's Blood is a new recording of the song of the same name from the debut album Infernal Battles .

reception

The album "makes the band's other albums irrelevant," according to The Metal Observer . Matthias Noll from Chronicles of Chaos, on the other hand, gave the album only three out of ten points and described the songs as boring, overly long, pretentious, excessive and aimless. Jeffrey van de Kemp from Archaic-Magazine.com called Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice the Black Metal album of 2004. Batteiger gave the album 4.25 out of 5, described it as an “impressive record” and praised the lyrics as the most intelligent Blasphemy he ever read; the lyrics are so good that he wished the band would do something more interesting than denouncing Christians, which would be a waste of time. Rock-Hard magazine lists the album in its list of "250 Black Metal Albums That You Should Know".
