Chambers Institution
The Chambers Institution , also Chambers Institute or Tweeddale Museum , historically Dean's House or Queensberry Lodging , is a museum in the Scottish town of Peebles in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
The building was built in the 16th or 17th century. It belonged to the property of the Dukes of Queensberry , from which the historical name Queensberry Lodging results. In 1857 William Chambers bought the property. He had it completely renovated and two years later bequeathed it to the city for the cultural edification of the citizens. Today it houses the Tweeddale Museum . As part of the renovation work, a wing was added to the rear. Another wing dates from 1911. Only a few fragments of the original building have survived.
collection
The museum is thematically divided into four areas. The anthropological section focuses on exhibits from Peeblesshire from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages . In addition, pieces and clothing from the Victorian and Edwardian ages are on display. There are also historical exhibits from Africa and India. The natural science exhibition shows both minerals and a biological collection of birds, insects and butterflies, as well as various exotic specimens. The small art section mainly shows landscape paintings by local artists. In the archival department, however, historical material from Peebles is on display. There are also changing exhibitions.
