The Champ-de-Mars (Eng. "Mars field") is a large green area in Montreal . It is located in the central arrondissement of Ville-Marie on the edge of the old town ( Vieux-Montréal ), between the Palais de Justice , the Hôtel de Ville and the Rue Saint-Antoine. The remains of the Montreal city walls can be found on this former parade ground .

A parade ground had existed since the 1740s on a property belonging to the Jesuits . In 1812, when the city walls were demolished, the city authorities suggested building a terrace behind the public buildings on Rue Notre-Dame , thus expanding the existing parade ground. The site served as a marketplace from 1899 and as a parking area from the 1920s . Between 1986 and 1991, a 250-meter-long section of the city walls was uncovered and restored, and in view of the city's 350th anniversary, the green area was redesigned into a park.

The subway station of the same name is named after the Champ-de-Mars .
