The Champs Bruley Cemetery is a cemetery in the French city of Besançon in the Doubs department . It is a communal cemetery and is therefore open to all residents, but is traditionally used as a Protestant cemetery. A number of important personalities, such as Jean-François Gigoux , are buried here.

history

The cemetery has been in use from 1793 until today (2018), making it the city's oldest cemetery still in use.

It was established for all residents, regardless of their denomination. The still predominantly Catholic population quickly rejected it because of its topography, isolation and absence of the Catholic Church. In 1824 it was officially converted to the Lutheran Cemetery. In 1881 it was converted into a communal cemetery; but it is still used as a de facto Protestant cemetery.
