Chancellor Records
Chancellor Records was an American record company based in Philadelphia . The company was on the market between 1957 and 1964.
history
Chancellor Records was founded in 1957 in Philadelphia by music producers Bob Marcucci and Peter DeAngelis . From the beginning there were close contacts to the Philadelphia TV show American Bandstand , which proved to be a cheap platform for spreading the Chancellor productions. There was also a collaboration with the large record company ABC-Paramount , through which Chancellor was able to use their worldwide sales channels. Marcucci had already made a name for himself in the rock 'n' roll scene as a talent promoter and, with his new company, created the opportunity to market these talents himself. He mainly relied on local performers from the Philadelphia region, and so the first stars at Chancellor were singers from Philadelphia: Jodie Sands , Frankie Avalon and Fabian .
Jodie Sands was the first to get into the Billboard Hot 100 with her track With All My Heart , where she achieved number 15 as the best listing in the spring of 1957. It was Chancellor's third production and was cataloged number 1003, with the number 1001 had started in 1957. Already at No. 1011 Chancellor made it into the top 10 with Frankie Avalon's title Dede Dinah , which advanced to 7th place. Avalon became the record company's most successful interpreter. With Venus and Why he had two number one hits in 1959 and was placed on the Hot 100 a total of 16 times with Chancellor productions. He was followed by Fabian, who placed seven times and contributed number three with the title Tiger .
Chancellor's success lasted until 1962, with a total of 29 singles making it into the Hot 100. Claudine Clark's last big hit was with Party Lights , which reached number five in the summer of 1962. In the same year Frankie Avalon and Fabian Chancellor Records left and embarked on a film career. Marcucci and DeAngelis did not succeed in finding adequate replacements, and numerous attempts with local rock groups failed. For example, The Surfaris started in 1963 with Chancellor ( The Midnight Surf / Psyche-Out , No. 1142), but only became successful with Dot Records .
Between 1957 and 1964, Chancellor Records released about 150 45-rpm singles . While the first productions were mono records, the records appeared in stereo from 1959. Chancellor released 32 long-playing records under catalog numbers 5001 to 5032, mainly with its stars Frankie Avalon and Fabian. The color of the plate labels was pink until 1959, after which a black label was used.
