Chanina (Tannait)
Chanina Segan ha-Kohanim (also: Chananja ; Hebrew חנינא סגן הכהנים) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity and belonged to the Tannaites of the 1st generation (contemporaries of Hillel ).
He was head of the priesthood, deputy high priest ( Segan ha-Kohanim ) and also worked in the period after 70 (destruction of the 2nd Temple). He died a martyr's death on Sivan 25th.
According to Avot III, 2 he had said: "Pray for the welfare of the government, because if it were not for fear of it, one would devour the other alive".
