Chapetón is the name of a large dam and hydropower plant in the north of Argentina . These will be built on Paraná , above Villa Urquiza and about 40 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Santa Fe . The project is also known as "Paraná Medio".

At 296.2 million m³, the volume of the barrier structure is currently the largest on earth after the dam of a sedimentation basin in Alberta (see →  Syncrude tailings pond ). The volume is due to the enormous length of the structure, which will be 224 km. This length is the largest known length of a dam. According to other information, the actual length of the dam is 8.5 km, to which a side dam of 240 km in length and 15 m in height is added between the cities of Santa Fe and Goya. The Chapetón Dam will be 13th worldwide with 60.6 billion cubic meters in terms of storage capacity.

The structure is a combination of a dam with a gravity dam . The reservoir will be 300 km long.

The technical data of the hydropower plant are:

  • Maximum storage height: 29 m
  • Maximum usable height: 18.30 m
  • Minimum usable height: 9.47 m
  • Average usable height: 15.38 m
  • Installed power generation capacity: 3000 megawatts
  • Average annual electricity generation: 18,578 gigawatt hours
  • Annual usable running time: 6190 hours

Dams on the Paraná

Further above, the Pati dam is also being planned or built, which will have dimensions similar to Chapetón. Yacyretá , another dam on the Paraná, is already completed. Itaipú is even further up the Parana, but no longer in Argentina .
