USS Samuel B. Roberts
Three ships of the United States Navy were named USS Samuel B. Roberts after the helmsman Samuel Booker Roberts , who perished off Guadalcanal in 1942 while on a volunteer mission to rescue a squad of Marines and received the Navy Cross posthumously:
- The USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) , a John C. Butler-class destroyer , entered service in 1944 and sunk in the Leyte Gulf during the sea and air battle .
- The USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD-823) , a gearing-class destroyer in service from 1946 to 1970.
- The USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) , an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate , in service since 1986 and badly damaged by a sea mine in the Persian Gulf in 1988.
