The character sheet (also called hero's letter and hero's sheet ) is an essential element of the pen & paper role-playing game .
Overview
The character sheet is considered a component of pen & paper role-playing games . Traditionally, the pen & paper game is played without computer support and the character traits of a player character are recorded on the printed character sheet.

Depending on the RPG system , a character sheet can contain different elements:
- Name and appearance of an RPG character
- Life story of the character
- Skills
- Learned spells
- inventory
- Animal and human companions
- Experience gained
- Life energy
The property values of an RPG character in the pen & paper RPG are changeable and are traditionally noted in handwriting on the character sheet. Changes occur, for example, when the player character learns or improves new skills, gathers experience or suffers strokes of fate (changes in physical characteristics such as mutilation, marriage, acquisition of nobility).
Character sheet generators
Traditionally, the basic properties of a character are determined when creating a character using dice and entered in the character sheet. Alternatively, character generator software can also be used, which accelerates this task with the aid of IT and creates a printable document. An approximation of the pen & paper role -playing game to the computer role-playing game can be seen above all if the hero document is kept entirely as a file instead of a printed character sheet .
