Khariton Chalachev
Khariton Stanchev Chalachev (also written Hariton Stanchev Halachev, Bulgarian Харитон Станчев Халачев ; * 1835 in Gabrovo ; † May 7, 1876 in the Drjanowo Monastery , today Bulgaria ), known as Pop Chariton (Bulgarian Поп Харt . Priest, d. Chariton) was a. Priest Bulgarian priest, freedom fighter and revolutionary.
Pop Chariton took part in the Stara Sagora uprising in 1875 and emigrated to Wallachia after it was suppressed by the Ottoman Turks . At the beginning of 1876 the priest returned to Bulgaria with the help of the Internal Revolutionary Organization and took part in the preparations for the outbreak of the Bulgarian April Uprising . He took over the training of the insurgents in the Gabrovo region and, after the outbreak of the uprising, commanded a 200-man Cheta .
Pop Chariton died with most of his men defending the Drjanowo Monastery from the regular Ottoman army. The Drjanowo Monastery was then destroyed and the uprising was bloodily suppressed.
Hariton Peak has been named after him since 2014 , a mountain in Ellsworthland in Antarctica.
