Charity shopping

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charity shopping is an Anglicism and describes the possibility of supporting non-profit organizations financially without donating your own money. For sellers, charity shopping is a sales method; for nonprofits, it's a fundraising method .

Basic principle

Price comparison portals and advertising platforms receive a commission from the online retailer for every purchase made within the framework of so-called affiliate marketing . In charity shopping, the charity shopping platforms undertake to transfer a certain percentage of these commissions to a non-profit organization. The buyer can determine which facility should be favored. For this, however, the institution must be registered on the portal. There is an exception for commissions for products that are subject to fixed book prices. The platforms retain these commissions because they are not allowed to be distributed due to the fixed book prices.

Beneficiary charities

Charities from all areas can be benefited: education, sport, animal welfare, church, humanitarian aid, etc. a. The two largest providers in addition to the market leader AmazonSmile in German-speaking countries are Bildungsspender.de and Schulengel.de. Germany's first online donation portal HelpDirect.org has been offering the first charity shopping solution at HelpShops.org since 2016 where donors also receive a tax-deductible donation receipt. In addition to the many charity shopping portals on the Internet, since April 2019 there has also been the option of using the smartphone app "buy locally" to trigger donations when shopping through local retailers.
