Charles "Chuck" Cushing Ladd (born November 23, 1932 in Brooklyn ) is an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Ladd studied at Bowdoin College (Bachelor of Arts 1955) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955, his Masters degree ( Swelling of compacted clay ) in 1957 and his PhD in soil mechanics in 1961. From 1957 he taught (initially as an instructor) at MIT, where he received a full professorship in 1970 (most recently as Edmund K. Turner Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering). In 2001 he retired. In 1983 he was a visiting scientist at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute.

He dealt with general soil mechanics, building on soft subsoil and offshore geotechnical engineering and in particular with the behavior of clay soils, for which he developed a bundle of test and sampling procedures called SHANSEP (Stress history and normalized soil engineering properties). They take into account the stress states during the consolidation of the clay soils, which have an influence on the undrained shear strength , but are not taken into account in conventional tests.

In 1999 he received the Terzaghi Award and in 1986 he gave the Terzaghi Lecture . In 1973 he received the Croes Medal, in 1976 the Norman Medal of the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) and in 1996 the Middlebrook Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (1983). In 1995 he became an honorary member of the ASCE.
