Charles Downs II House is a historically significant building in Berkeley County , West Virginia .
The house was built in 1835 in Federal Style with Flemish masonry , two floors and an L-shaped floor plan by Charles Down II. He was an entrepreneur who owned, among other things, four flour mills and several transport ships on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal . From 1852 to 1856 he was also elected justice of the peace.
Charles Downs II House is five yokes wide and three yokes deep. At the rear there is a two-level veranda . The double sliding and lattice windows have 6 or 9 panes. The ground floor windows of the front facade are decorated with flattened brick arches. Above the entrance door there is a combat window with seven panes and two narrow side windows. Above it is a wooden door lintel that has been held in place . There are six chimneys in the house, which has a central hall.
On May 17, 1991, Charles Downs II House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the main building, a garage made of scarf stone with a roof gable and a wood-frame stable from the 1920s are considered contributing properties . Charles Downs II House is a classic example of federal style in country homes.
