Charles H. Parrish Sr.
Charles Henry Parrish Sr. (* 1841 in Lexington , Kentucky , † 1931 in Louisville ) was an American civil rights activist , theologian and President of Simmons University.
Born in the time of slavery , the black theologian and pastor of the Baptist Church caused a sensation when he lodged a protest with the governor of his home state against racial segregation in rail traffic in 1892 .
He later founded the orphanage society for black children and was from 1918 until his death, the "Simmons University", which would later merge into the University of Louisville , before. As the local executive of the black civil rights movement , he was considered a capable organizer who also carried out a model trial against racial segregation.
His son Charles H. Parrish Jr. received a profound education from him and followed in his footsteps both scientifically, here as a sociologist , and politically.
