Charles Orlanducci (born October 28, 1951 in Vescovato , Corsica ) is a former French football player who played for the SEC Bastia for almost his entire career and was once a member of the national team of his country.

Club career

The 175 centimeter tall defender Orlanducci moved up to the professional team at SEC Bastia, based in Corsica, during the 1969/70 season and was able to present himself twice in France's top division during the season. In 1971 he was called up for army service, which he was allowed to do in the Battalion de Joinville near Paris , which was specially created for athletes . In view of this, those responsible made the decision to loan him to league rivals Red Star Paris . At first he was so unknown at the capital club that he had to buy a ticket before his first game in order to get into the stadium. However, he was able to establish himself increasingly and was regularly on the field for a team with which he narrowly escaped relegation in 1972. In the same year he returned to Bastia, where he was able to fight for a regular place during the 1973/74 season. From then on, he managed to maintain his permanent place in the top team and to work his way up to the upper midfield of the table with the club, which was threatened with relegation during his early career. In 1977 the team moved up to third place, which entitled them to participate in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup . Orlanducci was used throughout and beat all competitors with his comrades until they faced the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the final . The final was played in two finals at the time and the defender led the team as captain in both, although he had to bury hopes for the title due to a 3-0 defeat in the second leg after a goalless draw in the first leg.

After the respectable success in European competition, Orlanducci had to witness the crash of his team back into the lower half of the league table, but remained loyal to his club during these times. This paid off when Bastia made it into the national cup final in 1981 . With a pass to Roger Milla , he initiated the goal of the 2-0 intermediate result as a preparer and ultimately won the trophy with the 2-1 final against AS Saint-Étienne . In addition, the team secured a participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1981/82 , although the players could not build on their strength from 1977 and were eliminated in the second round against Dinamo Tbilisi . Orlanducci then experienced more years on the verge of relegation before he lost his regular place in the course of the 1985/86 season and the team had to start the second division at the same time as bottom of the table. After 17 years of first class, the player went to the second highest division, but did not make it back to the first team there either. In 1987 he ended his professional career at the age of 35 after 440 first division games with 13 goals and ten second division games with one goal. Since he played 430 of his first division appearances in Bastia's shirt, he is the club's record player in the top national division. In 2006, the former footballer was elected chairman of the board of his ex-club, which has now been renamed SC Bastia. He held this position until he resigned from the post in May 2010.

National team

Orlanducci was 24 years old when he made his debut for the French national team on November 15, 1975 in a 0-0 draw against Belgium . The encounter, which was about France's already missed qualification for the 1976 European Championship , was his only appearance in his country's jersey.

Play style

Orlanducci performed his role in defense mostly in the style of a pre-stopper . According to his own statement, he sometimes disregarded the usual style of passing the ball as quickly as possible, with the intention of getting involved in the offensive game. His goal here is to help players in critical situations in order to build up superiority in the game. This was initially not approved by coach Pierre Cahuzac , who looked after Bastia's team in the 1970s, but this did not change his style, according to Orlanducci.
