Charles River Laboratories is a US company that provides research and analytics services to pharmaceutical companies and research institutions.

The company analyzes raw materials used in pharmaceutical manufacture with regard to possible contamination, offers clinical laboratory services and provides other services to support pharmaceutical research work for its customers. An important business area for Charles River is the rearing of model organisms such as mice, rats and hamsters for carrying out animal experiments . According to the company, Charles River was involved in the development of 85% of all drugs approved by the FDA in 2019 .

The company was founded in Boston in 1947 by veterinarian Henry Foster and named after the nearby Charles River . With 1000 rat cages purchased, Henry Foster began breeding laboratory animals for local research institutions. In 1966, Charles River Laboratories opened its first overseas facility with a breeding facility in France. After the moon landing in 1969, specially bred mice from the company, which were sold under the trademark “Astromice”, became the first animals to be specifically exposed to moon dust for experimental purposes. The company was sold to Bausch & Lomb in 1984 , but company founder Henry Foster remained in the position of management. In 1997, Charles River was bought back by the founding family and three years later, in 2000, it was floated on the stock exchange.
