Charles "Charlie" Alexander Aitken (born January 5, 1942 in Edinburgh ) is a former Scottish football player on the position of a defender . He spent most of his active football career at Aston Villa , where he holds the club record for the most competitive appearances.

Career

Aitken played 17 seasons for Aston Villa from August 1959 to May 1976 and still holds the club record for most appearances. He has 561 league appearances and 14 league hits. If you add his FA Cup , League Cup and UEFA Cup appearances to that, Aitken had a total of 659 competitive games for Aston Villa and 16 goals. For the last two years of his professional career, he played in the North American Soccer League for the New York Cosmos .
