The Orpheum Dresden is an event hall and the oldest surviving ballroom in the Äußere Neustadt district of Dresden .

room

The old ballroom is located in a four-story Wilhelminian-style residential building, which also has commercial space, at 19 Kamenzer Straße in the Outer Neustadt. From the outside, the presence of the almost 400 square meter hall, which is accessed through a passage, is not recognizable. It has a circumferential gallery that can be reached via a double-barreled wrought-iron spiral staircase . The interior is very valuable in terms of monument preservation . All of the original fixtures except for the stage have been preserved. In addition to the galleries and the spiral staircase, this also includes the skylight and the cast iron supports. The old stucco ornamentation and various wall and ceiling paintings are also visible .

history

When the tenement house was built around 1873, the ballroom of the Orpheum was also built in it. It was a popular dance and meeting place. Due to the decline in the social importance of balls and the simultaneous appearance of cinemas such as the Schauburg , it was closed in 1932 because of the noise pollution of the residents. From 1936 to 1996 the hall was temporarily used as a grand piano and piano manufacturing workshop by the Thierbach brothers (“Piano-Thierbach”), which ultimately saved it from complete ruin. After the company had moved to the neighboring Böhmische Strasse, the Orpheum was restored until its 125th anniversary in 1998 and largely restored to its old, splendid original condition. The west side of the house was rebuilt to create better lighting conditions. For this, the former orchestral stage had to give way. In their place a glass facade was created over two floors and the entire width of the hall. The hall was then initially used as an architectural office. In the meantime it served as an exhibition and concert hall. In summer 2010, Dresden's first coworking space called CoOrpheum was located in the premises for a period of several months . In January 2011 the advertising agency move: elevator moved into the premises.
