Charlie Brown (Benito di Paula)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charlie Brown is a samba-style song by the Brazilian singer and pianist Benito di Paula from 1975. The title refers to the character Charlie Brown from the cartoon series The Peanuts . The composer Chico Buarque said of the song that it shows Charlie Brown as a real person. In the second verse of the song, Di Paula mentions his musician colleagues Vinícius de Moraes , Jorge Ben Jor and Luiz Gonzaga , who were part of the Brazilian political opposition at the time.

In the same year, the Belgian trio Two Man Sound recorded the piece in a disco-style arrangement with the original Portuguese text. The single with this version sold over a million copies and became a hit in Belgium and Italy. The dance moves of Two Man Sound were noticeable for the time. The song is also part of the Disco Samba medley by Two Man Sound.

With a different, German-language text, the song was published under the title Amigo Charly Brown in 1976 and again in 1994 by Hans-Jürgen Schnier as "Benny". In 2001 Jürgen Drews also sang this version of the piece under the title Hey! Amigo Charly Brown .

  2. The historian Gerhard Drekonja-Kornat writes about the music scene of the “Bahia Tropicalistas” at the time: “Benito de Paula, gorgeous samba kitschist, presented them all in an extremely popular hit by the cartoon character Charlie Brown. The officers furiously censored, harassed, withdrew passports, canceled concerts, drove individuals into exile, but never got under control of the music scene because Brazil's samba, anchored in the people, vibrates freely ”, in: Gabriel García Márquez in Vienna and other cultural stories from Latin America , LIT Verlag, Münster 2010, ISBN 3-643501-41-2 , page 174
