Charlotte Petersen

Charlotte Petersen (born June 11, 1904 in Niederschelden ; † August 1, 1994 ) was a German journalist who worked for the Dill-Post , among other things . She campaigned for understanding between people of different religions and for reconciliation between Jews and Christians.

She founded the Wapniarka aid organization for the surviving victims of the Wapniarka concentration camp , which was set up in 1941 during the Second World War . This camp was located in the province of Transnistria , which was captured by Romania at the time , and which has largely belonged to Ukraine again since the end of the occupation in 1944 .

In 1967 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class. In 1976 she received the Orange plaque from the city of Dillenburg .

On August 28, 1983 she was honored with the Hedwig Burgheim Medal of the city of Giessen “in recognition of her services to understanding between people” .

Charlotte Petersen has been an honorary citizen of the city of Dillenburg since June 12, 1986.

In 1989 she received the pastor Georg Fritze commemorative gift, named after Georg Fritze , from the evangelical church district of Cologne-Mitte, “for her commitment to the victims of dictatorship and violence” .

In recognition of her commitment to the Wapniarka aid organization, she was awarded the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal in 1990 by the German Coordination Council of Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation .

In 1994 she received the cultural honor award of the city of Dillenburg.

Since 2001, the city council of Dillenburg has awarded the Charlotte Petersen Medal, named after her, “for services to understanding between people” every two years.
