The Charlottenhof from the west (around 1900)

The Charlottenhof was an amusement facility in the north of Leipzig - Lindenau . The most important parts were an inn on an island and a gondola pond surrounding the island. In the 1920s, a sports facility with the same name was built on this site.

history

The brickworks in the village of Lindenau west of Leipzig extracted the necessary clay from pits in the meadow area to the north. Since the 1860s, the use of natural ice obtained in winter and its storage for cooling purposes in summer increased sharply. On a map from 1876, in the area of the clay pits, there are two ponds, each with an island, on which the buildings are labeled "Eiskeller".

At the end of the 1880s, a restaurant was built on the island in the west of the two ponds, the gondola operation was introduced and illusionistic accessories were built. The facility was opened in 1891, was given the name Charlottenhof and apparently went back to the ice cream producer, because postcards greeted the “Charlottenhof - Etablissement und Eiswerke”.

The inflation and the economic production of artificial ice meant the end of the amusement park and the use of the ice of the ponds. In 1923 the grounds of the amusement park were acquired by the gymnastics and sports community 1848 Leipzig-Lindenau, a merger of the three Lindenau sports clubs. The pond was filled in and in May 1924 operations began in the “Sportpark Charlottenhof”. The official inauguration of the facility with hall, pool, two playgrounds and a fencing track took place on July 26, 1925. In 2002 the Charlottenhof area, which has been used by SV Lindenau 1848 since 1990 , was one of the main venues of the German Gymnastics Festival .

description

At first there was only a small restaurant on the island next to the ice storage buildings, but soon a lookout tower and a rocky landscape on the west side were added. This was supposed to serve as illusionistic accessories for the rowing boaters, as was the passage through the dam leading to the island, which was designed as the jaws of a monster. In the western part of the pond there was a music pavilion with a colorful roof landscape and a fountain .

The pond could be circled on a promenade, whereby one could reach a fantasy landscape and a castle on the west side through a rocky passage, which also gave a picturesque impression from the water side. To the left of the beginning of the dam, the raised bastion allowed an overview of the facilities. In order to expand the catering capacity, a cultivated terrace was built on the bank and the so-called Great Hall and a corner pavilion with towers were built on the south side of the pond.
