The Charlottenkreuz was donated by King Wilhelm II of Württemberg on January 5, 1916 and could be awarded to all persons who had made special contributions in the field or at home to the care of the wounded and sick or in the field of general war welfare.

The decoration is a silver-plated clover leaf cross with the intertwined initials CW ( Charlotte and Wilhelm) in the medallion and the year 1916 on the reverse .

The award was worn on a yellow ribbon with a narrow and a wide black side stripe on the left side of the chest.
