Charmian Gooch

Charmian Gooch (* 1965) is a British historian and activist . She is co-founder and director of the non-governmental organization Global Witness .

Life

Charmian Gooch grew up in London. In 1987 she graduated from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth with a BA in History. She then worked as a research fellow at the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a London-based NGO that deals with the causes of environmental pollution. Gooch has been involved in various campaigns aimed at exposing environmental crime and the illegal trade in protected species. Their experiences from this work led to the establishment of Global Witness.

Gooch got involved in Global Witness' first campaign, which exposed the trade in tropical timber between the Khmer Rouge and Thai timber companies and their military and political backers. She also launched the campaign against blood diamonds , for which Global Witness was nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.

Awards

Gooch won the $ 1 million TED Prize in 2014 . Together with her colleagues from Global Witness, she received the Gleitsman International Activist Award and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship .
