Christ Church Parish Church

The Chase Vault is a burial site in the cemetery of Christ Church Parish Church in Christ Church Parish , Barbados .

The crypt is named after the Chase family, who had the tomb built in 1807. Until 1820, six family members were buried in the crypt - however, the pallbearers found the lead coffins at each burial in a different position than when they were placed.

Governor Lord Combermere decided in 1819 to seal the coffins and the tomb and to put sand on the ground to track down intruders with footprints. In April 1820, the governor had the crypt reopened: The seal was intact, but one of the heavy lead coffins was leaning against the door and the other coffins had also been moved again.

Thereupon it was decided to bury the coffins one by one outside the crypt in the church cemetery. The crypt has been empty since then.

Similar incidents have been reported from the older Williams crypt .
