In cell biology, the term checkpoint denotes a control point - as well as the control mechanism behind it - that regulates the chronological sequence of cell cycle processes .

The activation of cell cycle checkpoints was originally described as a response to specific cellular malfunctions, but it is now widely accepted that checkpoints are an integral part of physiological cell cycle processes.

The mitotic checkpoint (also known as spindle checkpoint ) is a mechanism that coordinates the timing of mitosis with the attachment of the kinetochore to the mitotic spindle apparatus .
