Gonioplectrus hispanus is a member of the groupers (Epinephelidae). Because of its yellow-orange vertical stripes it is called "Spanish flag" in English. Gonioplectrus hispanus is the only species in the genus Gonioplectrus .

distribution

The fish live in the tropical, western Atlantic , from Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil , in the Caribbean and in the Gulf of Mexico . Post larvae still living pelagic juvenile fish stages, which may have been drifted by the Gulf Stream , were also found further north, for example on the coast of North Carolina . Gonioplectrus hispanus lives over rocky biotopes at depths of 35 to more than 300 meters.
