location

The place is about 25 km southwest of Bristol at the foot of the Mendip Hills near the Cheddar Cliffs.

history

The area around the village has a long history. Evidence has been found in the caves of Cheddar Gorge that the area was inhabited as early as 11,000 BC. The Gough Cave is the archaeological site of the finds from the late Paleolithic (12,000-13,000 years old) and the oldest complete skeleton in Britain ( Cheddar Man , approx. 9,000 years old). In 1130 a contemporary author named the gorge one of the "Four wonders of England" because of its scenic beauty.

The region was first mentioned under King Alfred in 880, when the place was known as Ceodre . In 1086, the year the Domesday Book was written, cheddar was in royal possession. The village was in the middle of a medieval forest depending on the laws of nature. In the 13th century, when the cheese was already famous, the place expanded, but this changed again in the middle of the 14th century because of the plague and the subsequent famine.

Tourism began in 1869 with the opening of the Cheddar Valley Railway . The workers came from the cities to enjoy a day off on the bank holiday . The line was also as The Strawberry Line ( " Strawberries known because she transported -line") strawberries from the area to all parts of the country. Strawberries are still grown today and sold by the roadside.

Town twinning

Cheddar maintains a town partnership with the German town of Felsberg in the Schwalm-Eder district and the French municipality of Vernouillet .

Attractions

The place is known for the Cheddar cheese that is made there. The name Cheddar probably comes from the Celtic and means "whey". Cheddar is now a popular destination. Remains of a Roman villa have been discovered. A monument (Cheddar Market Cross) at the intersection of three streets in Cheddar has marked the former market square since the 15th century. St. Andrew's Church, the caves, the Cheddar Gorge and the cheese museum are well worth seeing . Excursion destinations are z. B. Weston-super-Mare , Glastonbury Tor and the cities of Bath , Wells and Bristol .
