The Cheesesteak , also known as Philadelphia Cheesesteak or Philly Cheesesteak , is a sandwich specialty from Philadelphia . It consists mainly of very thinly sliced steak meat (often ribeye ), which is briefly fried and then served with cheese , usually provolone , sometimes also processed cheese , in an elongated, soft wheat roll . The cheesesteak, which is said to have been invented in the 1930s by the brothers Pat and Harry Olivieri in Pat's King of Steaks, is offered with or without glazed onions or green peppers and other ingredients.
