Chekri Ganem

Chekri Ganem ( Chukri Ghanem , * 1861 in Beirut , † 1929 ) was a French-speaking Lebanese journalist and writer .

The vehement advocate of Lebanon's independence from the Ottoman Empire spent most of his life in exile. After stays in Egypt and Tunisia, he came to France where he was Vice President of the Congrès Arabe-Syria in Paris in 1913 .

He founded the magazine Al Mostaqbal and published his volume of poetry Ronces et Fleurs in 1896 . In 1908 his novella Da'ad was published . He has also written numerous plays, including Antar , which was performed in 1910. Gabriel Dupont 's opera of the same name has received critical acclaim for both its literary and musical quality. Ganem's piece Giaour was set to music by Marc Delmas in 1914 .
