Chemical transport model

Chemical transport models are a type of model used in atmospheric research. Other models used in meteorological research are radiation transport models or numerical weather forecast models .

Chemical transport models have two components:

  1. Description of the transport of atmospheric components using dynamic equations from meteorology .
  2. Description of the chemical processes that take place between the transported components.

Since both the transport equations and the chemical relationships can assume enormous complexity, simplifications are made. These simplifications can affect the underlying chemical and physical processes as well as the mathematical accuracy of the results that are accepted. Simplifications can also be achieved by assuming certain boundary conditions (e.g. temperature ranges).

Chemical transport models are the basis for the evolving field of chemical weather forecasting . This allows predictions to be made about the development of the chemistry of the earth's atmosphere , for example about the development of the ozone hole or the proportion of nitrogen dioxide in the air.
