Gauge : 600 mm ( narrow gauge )

The Chemin de Fer de l'Exposition du Nord de la France (also Le Tramway électrique or Chemins de fer portatifs ) was a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 600 mm operated by Arthur Koppel in 1904 in Arras with an electric locomotive .

history

The electrically operated narrow-gauge railway was used to transport visitors to the exhibition held in Arras from May 1 to October 10, 1904 in northern France. The exhibition was inaugurated on May 23, 1904 by the French President Émile Loubet . A total of around 1300 exhibitors were represented.

In particular, two permanently erected structures, the Senegalese village and the Algerian pavilion, aroused the curiosity of the visitors. These two attractions are intended to reflect the extent of the administrative, economic, craft and cultural life of the colonial empire. An exhibition of the fine arts also impressed visitors with notable works such as Le Figuig by Eugène Deshayes , Devant l'école de la rue Kléber à Alger by Alfred Chataud or La Prière au Douar by Émile Bertrand , all members of the Société des Artistes Algériens .

Rail vehicles

The unusually narrow electric locomotive belonged to the Compagnie des mines de Bruay from Bruay-la-Buissière, 40 km north-west . The cars came from the Lille- based branch of the German rail vehicle manufacturer Arthur Koppel .
