The Chemnitz Christmas market takes place annually during Advent around the historic town hall and, with around 200 stalls and booths, is one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany . The Christmas atmosphere in the Ore Mountains is distinctive with a five-story Christmas pyramid , life-size miners and angels figures , nutcrackers , candle arches and smokers, as well as the sale of traditional Ore Mountain handicrafts and local specialties.

As a prelude and popular attraction, the Great Mountain Parade with more than 1100 people wearing traditional costumes and mountain musicians heralds the Christmas season in Chemnitz every year on the day before the 1st Advent .

procedure

The Christmas market usually begins at the beginning of December with the traditional stollen cut by the mayor and " Santa Claus " and ends on December 23rd. A spruce tree more than 20 meters high is set up on the market square and decorated with 800 Christmas candles. The 12 meter high Christmas pyramid has been rotating there every year since 1986, with 24 figures on five floors depicting everyday life in the Ore Mountains. The Budendorf extends over the market in front of the town hall, Neumarkt, Rosenhof, Jakobikirchplatz, Düsseldorfer Platz and Innere Klosterstrasse and includes a medieval market with a monastery Christmas, an Erzgebirge village and a children's area with a fairytale stage.

The mountain musicians make music through the streets of the city center lined with onlookers to the town hall , where they are greeted by the mayor and give a farewell ceremony and concert, which traditionally ends with the Steiger song "Glück auf! Glück auf! - the Steiger is coming".
