Chic Records
Chic Records was an American record label founded by Chic Thompson.
history
The businessman Chic Thompson founded the label Chic Records in Thomasville , Georgia in late 1956 . The first release was Dixie Doll / Dixie Polka by Giddy Smith (Chic 1001). The artists were mostly local and were unknown talents that Thompson discovered.
In 1957, Thompson obtained the distribution rights to a British hit , Freight Train / The Cotton Song , from the Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group , which held number 5 on the UK charts. Thompson funded its US release on his small label, and the single hit number 40 on the Billboard charts, which was an unexpected success for the small label. The record faced in 1957 with Rusty Drapers' version of Freight Train for Mercury Records , which peaked at number 6.
The year 1957 also brought some rockabilly artists to Chic, such as Pat Kelly , Rod Willis and Don Johnston , who later became a sought-after producer in Nashville . The label could not repeat the chart success of the Skiffle group, as the singer, Nancy Whiskey, left the group during the US tour. In addition, Thompson had difficulties with distributors who did not pay bills, so the label had to close again after its 15th publication ( These Hands / Steps of Sorrow by Dick Lindy) in 1957. Thompson then joined Bill Lowery companies National Recording Corporation on.
