Chilfa
R. Chilfa (also: Ilfa , also: Chilfi ) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, is counted among the Palestinian Amoraians of the second generation and lived and worked in the second and third centuries AD.
He was a youth comrade and friend of Jochanan and was already important in the rabbi's time.
Once Chilfa and Jochanan found themselves in great need, so that they had to give up their studies and turn to commercial activities. Jochanan returned to study and became head of the academy, while Chilfa stayed with trade, but did not forget the knowledge of the Torah. He was told that he too could have been the director of the academy. He then demanded that his knowledge be scrutinized and announced that he would plunge into the sea if he failed. The test was made and passed by Chilfa (bab Taanit 21 a).
