The volcano Cerro El Pacayal , also Volcán Chinameca and Volcán de Chinameca , is a stratovolcano in the eastern part of El Salvador .

location

It is located north of the Chaparrastique volcanic area in the San Miguel department in the municipal area of ​​the city of Chinameca . The volcanic cone has a height of 1,300 meters and the height of the secondary peak Cerro El Pacayal is 1,117 meters above sea level. Fumaroles appear at regular intervals on the north side of the volcano .

A geothermal power plant from LaGeo is in the planning stage . The test drillings in the volcanic area showed an annual average temperature of 210 degrees Celsius ± 6 ° C and the calculated power plant output should be around 110 MW.

earthquake

In 1951 there were three earthquakes with a magnitude between 5.9 and 6.2 ( Richter scale ). During the last earthquake on May 6 and 7, 1951 at the base of the volcano, numerous houses were destroyed and around 25,000 people were left homeless.
