The Chinese Chuandong hound is not from the FCI recognized dog breed from the People's Republic of China . The breed is recognized as a national breed by the China Kennel Union (CKU), which represents China in the FCI. The CKU classifies the breed according to the FCI standard in group 6: hounds, screeches and related breeds. The FCI recognition is sought.

Origin and history

The history of this breed can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty (BC 202 - AD 8). On April 20, 2000, archaeologists in Chongqing found a huge Western Han Dynasty cemetery. A large number of ceramic dog statues of this type have been found there. Some of them served as patron gods to spiritually accompany the grave of the noble family. This ancient breed was also used for hunting in the mountainous areas of eastern Sichuan. They are intelligent, fearless, agile species with an excellent sense of smell. The Chuandong Hound is a medium-sized dog covered with a short, rough coat that improves its flexibility when hunting.

Both the Chinese Chuandong Hound and the Chinese Chongqing Dog were bred from the same ancestors. The CKU, the Chinese dog breeding association, has these under separate names. He is a medium-sized dog, larger than the Chongqing Dog, fearless. The muscles are well developed and their anatomical structure is suitable for activities. The dog is rectangular and a little longer than it is tall. The fur is in different shades of red, it is hard, short, without an undercoat. The shoulder height is 45 to 50 cm for the male and 40 to 45 cm for the bitch. It differs significantly from the Chinese Chongqing Dog in its size and its longer snout.
