Chinique is a place in the department of El Quiché , Guatemala and the seat of the municipality of the same name ( Municipio ). The name Chinique is derived from chinic´aj taka´aj ( the language of the Indians ) and means something like place in the middle of the flat plain .
The place is 1850 meters above sea level. In 2002, there were 8,009 people in Chinique in an area of 64 square kilometers. The Chiniquensen speak Spanish and K'iche ' .
