The Soviet Konjok-Gorbunok ( Russian Конёк-Горбунок , "Hunchback Horse", also: Chioni No. 5 , Хиони No. 5) was created in 1923 and was the first agricultural aircraft of the Soviet Union . It was named after the fairy tale of the same name by the Russian poet Pyotr Jerschow .

development

The pilot Wassili Chioni , employed in the Odessa aircraft repair shop No. 7, made the proposal to build an aircraft for pilot training from the parts left over from the Anatra-D production there. Fiat engines stored there should also be used as propulsion.

The first copy was completed by Chioni as U-8 (u for utschebny, training) in the spring of 1923. The two-seater type was created in wood with a rectangular fuselage cross-section and plywood planking. The double-decker structure and the braced tail unit were also made of wood and had a fabric covering. Only the upper wing had ailerons. The landing gear was rigid and had a grinding spur at the stern.

Chioni carried out the flight tests personally in Odessa and Moscow. It was successful, but the need for trainer aircraft was covered. So it was decided to place a spray container for insecticides in the front cabin. In this version, the Chioni No. 5 was built in 30 copies and mainly used to control locusts . She was in the service of agricultural aviation until 1928 . It was presented to the international public at the 1928 ILA in Berlin.
