Chisik Island is a 26.06 km² island off the coast of Alaska in the west of the Cook Inlet .
geography
The island measures 10.5 km in NNW-SSE direction. Their maximum width is 3.6 km. The highest point is Mount Chisik, 815 m high. The island is separated from the mainland to the west by the Tuxedni Channel , which is almost a kilometer wide . To the north of the island is the exit of Tuxedni Bay . The 3054 m high volcano Mount Iliamna rises 30 km to the west-southwest . About 500 m off the east coast of Chisik Island is the 2.4 hectare Duck Island (formerly known as Egg Island ) ( ⊙ ). On the southwestern shore of the island near Snug Harbor, there is a fish processing plant that was closed in 1970. The tidal range at this point is 7.65 m.
Protected area status
A bird sanctuary was set up in 1909 for the two islands, Chisik Island and Duck Island. The reserve later became the Tuxedni National Wildlife Refuge . In 1970 it was classified as a Wilderness Area and in 1977 as a Class I air quality area . In 1980 the sanctuary finally became part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge .
Animal fauna and flora
Both islands are covered with dense green alder ( Alnus crispa ) vegetation. The islands provide habitat and nesting opportunities for a range of seabirds, including kittiwake , guillemot, and hornlund . Other birds on the islands are: pigeon duck , bering gull , short-tailed albatross and eskimo curlew . The peregrine falcon and the bald eagle are also found on Chisik Island . On the coast u. a. before: leatherback turtle , Steller sea lion , bowhead whale , humpback whale and plush head duck . There are also the Canadian lynx and the sea otter on the islands .
