The Mount Iliamna - even Iliamna or Iliamna Volcano - is a 3,054  m high active glaciated stratovolcano in southwestern Alaska ( USA ).

location

It is located in the Chigmit Mountains in the extreme north of the Aleutian chain on the west coast of Cook Inlet , 215 km southwest of Anchorage . The Tuxedni Glacier flows north from its northern flank to the Tuxedni River . The eastern flank is drained via the Red Glacier .

60 km southwest is the eponymous Iliamna Lake .

Description of the volcano

It is a typical stratovolcano, the upper part of which is made up of layers of andesite . Here, change lavas with pyroclastic materials from. The different layers are particularly well exposed on the 600 m high steep walls on the south and east sides.

The subsoil is formed by granite rocks from the Aleutian batholith and even older volcanic rock layers, which have their origins in the Bruin Bay Rift .

The iliamna is considered active and is therefore monitored. There are fumaroles at an altitude of about 2740  m .

The glaciated volcano is located in Lake Clark National Park .

In 1976, Mount Iliamna was designated as a National Natural Landmark .
