The Aleutenkette , also Alëutenkette , ( English Aleutian Range ) is a mountain range on the Alaska Peninsula ( Alaska , USA ). It stretches from Chakachamna Lake (130 km west of Anchorage ) to the Aleutian island of Unimak . The northernmost part is also known as the Chigmit Mountains and represents the transition from the Alëutenkette to the Alaska range adjoining in the northeast .
The mountain range contains a large number of active volcanoes . On the mainland, its length is about 1,000 km. From a geological point of view, the Alëutenkette forms an extension of a further 1,600 km in length further west in the context of the Aleutian Islands, partly covered by the sea. Its wild landscape is hardly accessible to traffic and can only be reached by ship or plane.
