The Mount Veniaminof is a 2,507 m high stratovolcano of the Aleutian Range on the Alaska Peninsula . The volcano was named after Ivan Veniaminov (1797–1879), a Russian Orthodox priest who proselytized the Aleut population.
Around 1750 BC A volcanic eruption of magnitude 6 on the volcanic explosion index occurred at Mount Veniaminof, which resulted in the formation of a large caldera (8 km × 11 km). There have been several small outbreaks in recent history, more than ten since 1930.
Veniaminof is one of the highest volcanoes in Alaska and is therefore covered by a glacier that fills a large part of the caldera. In the future, an eruption of the volcano could lead to the formation of a glacier run.
In 1967 Mount Veniaminof was designated a National Natural Landmark .
