The Walrus Islands are a small group of islands in Bristol Bay , a bay of the Bering Sea , off the south coast of Alaska . They are located south of Togiak Bay , around 18 km east of Hagemeister Island . Administratively they belong to the Dillingham Census Area .
The main islands are Summit Island , High Island , Crooked Island , Black Rock Island, and Round Island . With a north-south extension of 10 km, Crooked Island is the largest island in the group.
The Walrus Islands were designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968 . The archipelago is the southernmost and, with up to 4,000 animals, the last major rearing area for walruses in the United States . The landmark consists of seven islands that together form the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary .
In 1826, Lieutenant Sarichew of the Imperial Russian Navy named one of the islands "Morzh" ( German : Walrus). Captain Mikhail Tebenkov, also from the Imperial Russian Navy, later named the entire archipelago "Ostrova Morzhovyya" (Walrus Islands).
