The McNeil River is an approximately 55 km long river in the east of the Alaska Peninsula .
It rises from a glacier in the Aleutian Range , flows northeastward and flows 55 km southwest of Augustine Island into McNeil Cove , a bay in the southwest of the Cook Inlet .
The McNeil River lies entirely within the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary , a designated National Natural Landmark and surrounded by Katmai National Park . The river's many low, shallow waterfalls provide brown bears with great salmon fishing opportunities.
The river is named after Charlie McNeil, a farmer from the region.
