Chlosyne rosita is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the noble butterfly family(Nymphalidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 37 to 50 millimeters. The forewing upper sides are deep black and provided with many small white spots. The upper side of the hind wing shows a strong orange color, which is bordered by a wide black band in the submarginal region . The underside of the forewing essentially depicts the upper side somewhat paler. On the underside of the hind wing, the basal region is blackish and the discal region is ocher-colored without drawing and delimited by a reddish line to the outside. White and ocher rows of dots stand out from the black submarginal region.
Caterpillar, pupa
Adult caterpillars have a whitish blue to light greenish color and a black side stripe. Dark, strongly branched thorns emanate from each segment. The head is orange brown.
The pupa is yellowish to whitish or dark brown in color and has small black dots or stripes. She is trained as a fall doll.
Similar species
Chlosyne janais clearly differs by several rows of black dots in the disk region on the underside of the hind wing.
Distribution and occurrence
The main range of the species is in Central America, the northernmost occurrence is in the US states Arizona and Texas . Chlosyne rosita prefers to colonize open subtropical forests.

In addition to the nominate form Chlosyne rosita rosita known from Guatemala , a distinction is made between the following other subspecies , which all occur in Mexico :

Way of life
The moths fly in successive generations. They like to suckle on flowers. The eggs are laid in groups on the underside of the food plant. Young caterpillars are sociable and feed on the leaves of various acanthus plants (Acanthaceae).
