The wingspan of the moth is 48 to 67 millimeters. The forewing upper sides are deep black and provided with many small white spots. The upper side of the hind wing shows a strong orange color, which is bordered by a wide black band in the submarginal region . The underside of the forewing essentially depicts the upper side somewhat paler. On the underside of the hind wing, the following color sequence can be seen from the inside to the outside: basal region black with light stripes, disk region ocher with two rows of black dots, post- disc region orange and submarginal region black with one white and one ocher row of dots.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The eggs have a spherical shape, are ribbed and colored yellow. They are deposited in groups on the underside of the leaves of the food plant.

Adult caterpillars have a whitish blue to light greenish color. On each segment there are black horizontal stripes from which dark, branched thorns extend. The head is orange brown.

The pupa is yellowish to whitish in color and has small black dots or stripes. She is trained as a fall doll.

The main range of the species is in Central America and extends south to Colombia . The northernmost occurrence is in the US states of Arizona and Texas . Chlosyne janais prefers to colonize subtropical forest edges.

Subspecies

In addition to the nominate form Chlosyne janais janais , two other subspecies , both of which occur in Mexico , are distinguished:

  • Chlosyne janais gloriosa Bauer , 1960
  • Chlosyne janais marianna Röber , 1914
