Chopin Society

The Chopin Society is an institution active in many countries to preserve and promote the music of the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin . The original seat has been in Warsaw (Poland) since 1934. The society is dedicated to the memory of the composer in a variety of ways. It maintains museums and collections, organizes concerts, competitions and fosters international cultural exchange. Since 1960 she has hosted the renowned international Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

In Germany

The Chopin Society in the Federal Republic of Germany e. V. was founded in 1970 by the Polish pianist Maciej Łukaszczyk (1934–2014), who was its president until shortly before his death. The German Chopin Society in the FRG has its seat in Darmstadt. It has been organizing international master classes for pianists regularly since 1972 and, based on the Warsaw competition, has organized a national and now international Chopin competition for young pianists every 3 or 4 years since 1983.

In 1962 the 'Chopin Society of the GDR', today the German Chopin Society e. V. , whose headquarters are in Cottbus. It cultivates Chopin's work, initiates concerts and lectures, promotes young pianists and influences musical life with the aim of promoting performances of Chopin's works with national and international artists. The president is the musicologist and composer Bernd Weinreich ( Cottbus ).

One of the most active Chopin societies is the Chopin Society Hannover e. V. It supports young, international pianists at the beginning of their concert career through public appearances, travel grants and contacts to the Chopin societies organized around the world. The highlight of every concert year is the open-air concert in the Georgengarten, to which several thousand spectators appear with free admission. Other German companies are based in Leipzig, Hamburg-Sachsenwald and the Taunus.

The national Chopin societies are members of the International Federation of Chopin Societies of the World , which was founded in 1985 and currently has around 50 other member societies worldwide.
