Chott Boul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chott Boul is a coastal lowland in Mauritania . It is located in Aftout es Saheli , a remote region of around 120,000 hectares between the Senegal estuary and the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott . The coastal lowlands are occasionally flooded by seawater when waves during Atlantic storms wash over the dunes that separate the lowland from the Atlantic. In the past, floods in Senegal occasionally flooded this region. Today this only happens when dams are opened on the upper reaches of the river.

The area is owned by the Mauritanian state and is subject to the Ramsar Convention . Otherwise it is not subject to any further protective measures. The low coast is especially important for flamingos. Greater flamingos breed here in the few years in which the coastal lowland has a low water level. In 1986 150 nests were counted here, in 1987 a crèche with 4,500 young birds was observed. It is also the only place in West Africa where a breeding attempt by Lesser Flamingos has so far been proven.
