Choummaly Sayasone ( Lao : ຈູມ ມະ ລີ ໄຊ ຍະ ສອນ ; * March 6, 1936 in Attapeu ) was General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and 6th President of Laos from 2006 to 2016 .

Choummaly was born the son of a farmer and went to the Pathet Lao associations as a youth , where he temporarily served under Vietnamese command. He served himself from simple soldier to major general . In 1975 his name was officially known for the first time in the function of Deputy Chief of Staff .

Choummaly was promoted to Deputy Minister of Defense in 1982 and Minister of Defense in 1991 (again succeeding Khamtay Siphandone ). This went hand in hand with his ascent in the party, since around 1982 he has been a member of the Central Committee. In 1991 he was promoted to the Politburo . The next step in his career was his promotion to Deputy Prime Minister (while retaining his office as Minister of Defense) in February 1998. He retired from active service in 2001 and was elected Vice President.

In March 2006, the Central Committee appointed him Secretary General of the party. Finally, on March 8, 2006, the newly elected National Assembly appointed him President, with the previous Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachith as deputy. He was re-elected in June 2014.
