Chresmologist

As chresmologue ( Greek  χρησμολόγος from χρησμός "oracle") is a collector and compiler of oracles called. Chresmology describes oracles accordingly .

Subjects of such collections were not only oracles in the narrower sense, but also general wisdom and testimonies of mythical poets such as Orpheus or Musaios .

A well-known chresmologist was Onomakritus , who collected (and interpolated ) the sayings of Musaios .

Chresmologos can also, in contrast to the inspired seer ( mantis ), denote the herald ( prophetes ) and interpreter of an oracle, i.e. H. in this case the chresmologist is part of the cultic staff of an oracle site.
